Not only is there a well-equipped gym, but the ship carries a fleet of bikes. Colleen and I started several days with a run along the riverside trails through small towns or by grabbing a couple of bikes to go exploring independently. And for more information on the popular sunset dinner cruise aboard a riverboat, check out our previous article here. Curl up with a good book in one of our spacious lounges aboard the riverboat. Or relax on the sun deck or private balcony and enjoy the passing landscapes as we make our way along the Ohio River from Louisville to Cincinnati. Be entertained on board by local musicians as you enjoy the afternoon rolling on the mighty Mississippi.
Bring Bug Spray on Your Ohio River Cruise, Especially When on Port Stops

Cruise from the Ohio River to the Mississippi River on your way to St. Louis.
Day By Day Itinerary
The surrounding hillsides provide a handsome backdrop for this fascinating city which was the gateway to the West for the young United States. Wander along the landing to admire more than 50 murals which highlight the region’s rich history. Learn the importance of the town as headquarters for Civil War General Ulysses S. Grant as he embarked to secure Union control of the rivers. Only a block away, the excellent River Discovery Center illuminates for you the importance of the rivers to this historic port.

For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices. Built in 2012 and carrying up to 417 passengers, this is the largest steamship ever built. The Grand Saloon resembles a 19th-century opera house with private boxes wrapped around the theater and hanging over the main level and the stage adorned with a large red curtain. The menu includes items like chicken fried steak, frog legs, and a variety of steak and fish preparations. The cuisine is more hearty than healthy, but you can find some fresh fruits and salads in the mix at the lunch buffets. We were always tempted by the mouth-watering selection of homemade pies and slices of chocolate cake set out each day at lunch.
States along the Ohio River in July can get pretty muggy and with humidity come mosquitoes. They're not so much of a problem on the river itself, but during port stops you'll want something to keep them away. For example, we offer an eight-day trip from lovely little Alton, Illinois (actually on the Mississippi River not far from St. Louis, Missouri), to Louisville, Kentucky. The trip begins on a high note in Alton, site of the last debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas in October 1858.
Night The Best Of The RhineDetails
I have been on several cruises and travel adventures around the world, but recently, I’ve felt the need to focus on discovering great destinations closer to home. The U.S. is filled with countless experiences that travelers can unlock, and a river cruise offers the chance to see so many things in an efficient, hassle-free, and fun way. The Mississippi River may be more famous for its steamboat history than any other river in the U.S., but the paddlewheel actually got its start on the Ohio River. The Ohio River is still a main thoroughfare for shipping and an integral part of the lives of locals along its banks. Despite the river traffic, Ohio River cruises are delightfully scenic and relaxing; there's more to see than you might expect.

I was happy to accept an invite from American Queen Voyages to review this special itinerary. St. Louis is often referred to as the “Gateway to the West.” Take in the Gateway Arch Riverfront, highlighted by the Gateway Arch, the largest man-made monument in the U.S. Enjoy St. Louis' many world-class attractions, including the Art Museum, Science Center, Anheuser-Busch Brewery, and the Missouri History Museum.
American Queen Voyages provides a wonderful service in its hop-on, hop-off bus routes in each city and on each river itinerary that it operates. Passengers walk off the ship and straight onto waiting buses with clear signage at each stop along the route at the attractions in town. I had been on voyages on the Mighty Mississippi River and even a couple in the Pacific Northwest on the Columbia and Snake rivers that traverse through Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. These itineraries are fairly well known, but I was fascinated to see what an Ohio River cruise was all about.
View a treasure trove of incredible works of art created with fabric, needle, and thread at the National Quilt Museum. An impressive waterfront town arching up the hillside, Louisville has a long history of commerce and revelry. The town grew at a portage around the treacherous Falls of the Ohio, now inundated behind the Ohio River’s Markland Dam. The historic importance of river commerce to the town is represented by the “Belle of Louisville” day excursion boat just down the banks, still operating after more than a century. Explore the impressive Churchill Downs to learn about the city’s renowned Kentucky Derby, the oldest continuously held horse race in the country. Or relax on the sun deck or private balcony and enjoy the passing landscapes as we make our way along the Ohio River from Cincinnati to Louisville.
Town's early economy was based mainly on cargo and passenger shipping (by steamboats). Since the mid-19th-century the economy was boosted with the opening of the Baltimore-Ohio Railroad (1828), Belpre-Cincinnati Railroad (1860), Ohio Valley Railroad (1873). Steamboats regularly transported passengers between Marietta and Parkersburg WV (West Virginia). The Pure Oil Company (now Unocal) was founded in 1914 by the Dawes brothers.
As it turns out, it’s filled with memorable experiences and a range of fun ways to spend your days. American Queen owns a special charm and an incredible river cruise program that makes it a favorite way to cruise within the U.S. Both Mississippi River and Ohio River cruises bookend their itineraries with large cities, but pack them full of the lifeblood-of-America small towns to give cruisers a real taste of Americana. Because Ohio River sailings always start or end on the Mississippi (either in St. Louis or Memphis), you can combine an Ohio River cruise with a Mississippi River sailing for a true American heartland voyage. Port Marietta OH cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month.
You can get off at each spot or pick and choose what you are interested in on the loop. A hip vibe can be found nightly at the Engine Room Bar, where the ship’s musicians get the crowd dancing with a great mix of blues and rock tunes. In Marietta, Ohio, attractions included Mound Cemetery, one of the oldest in the original Northwest Territory, the Ohio River Museum, and the Childen’s Toy & Doll Museum.
